Introduction

The financial advice industry is broadly divided into two categories - advisers working for financial institutions selling their products [around 75%] and those who are independently owned with no product ownership [around 25%].

The Association of Independently Owned Financial Planners (AIOFP) motto of DO NOT INVEST WITH ANYONE UNDER THE INFLUENCE concisely sums up the dynamics of the advice marketplace. If you seek advice from an institution it is highly likely their products will dominate your investment portfolio.

Consumers often go to financial institutions because they feel 'safe'. What should be understood is that independently owned advisers only advise on where savings should be invested, you do not invest in the adviser's business. By only investing your time you will get a diverse portfolio that suits your needs, not someone else's.

AIOFP members are licensed to give advice in the following areas:-

  • Strategic investment advice
  • Superannuation options
  • Gearing and Margin Lending
  • Savings Programs
  • Self Managed Superannuation
  • Share market/Equities positioning
  • Property options
  • Income producing investments
  • Estate Planning and Risk Advice
  • Mortgage advice

The AIOFP is a national network of independently owned practices in both regional and capital city areas. We have over 2000 advisers through 160+ practices representing over $20 Billion of funds under advice. Practice Directors must apply to the Australian Securities & Investment Commission [ASIC] for an Australian Financial Services License where strict educational and experience hurdles must be met. To protect consumer's interests, all members must carry Professional Indemnity Insurance.

Please note... the corporations laws strict interpretation of what consitutes an independent adviser is no institutional/product manufacturer ownership and receives no upfront or ongoing brokerage from product manufacturers. Please be advised that AIOFP has a mixture of members that either charge clients directly or receive brokerage from product manufacturers depending on what suits the clients circumstances. Please ensure you discuss your preference with your selected AIOFP member.
